SOUTHERN COAL FIELDS
The Southern Coalfields located close to Port Kembla produce some of the best premium quality hard coking coal in the world. It is mined to a depth of 550 metres using the latest underground mining technology, producing coal that has low volatility and medium ash content.
Apart from servicing major export markets, coal produced in the Southern Coalfields also supplies the Australian steel industry, including Australia’s largest steelworks operated by BlueScope Steel at Port Kembla and OneSteel’s Whyalla steelworks.
Export quality steaming (thermal) coal is also recovered during the washing process of the coking coal.
